First let’s start by selecting the oil type regarding the temperature chart.
MTD – Yard Machines 21″ 3 in 1 Push Mower – Side Discharge/Mulch/Rear Bag has a 159cc OHV POWERMORE® 4 stroke engine.
Since the MTD Push Mower will not operate at temperatures lower than 0C (32F) I am recommending 10W30 OR 10W40 oil (Multi Viscosity).
I will use 10W40 for my oil change.
Oil quantity needed for this engine capacity is 20oz (0.600 liter)
Second we will have to prepare the tools.
Third … now we can start the oil change job.
Most of all be sure to have the engine cool at this point.
Next go and disconnect the spark plug boot from the spark plug and place the boot away from spark head.
Clean the drain plug area with a rag.
You have to elevate the Push Mower. I used some empty cans and I placed them under the four wheels. The Push Mower has to have an inclination forward (around 5degree).
Next place the used oil recipient under the oil drain tub. Moreover use a large container to avoid oil spills.
YOU MUST WEAR GLOVES ALL THE TIME WHEN HANDLING OIL BECAUSE CAN CAUSE HARM TO YOUR SKIN.
Loose or remove the Cap/Dipstick. When remove the Cap/Dipstick AVOID ANY FOREIGN MATERIALS to drop in the oil drain pipe.
One step further remove the drain plug (turn the key counter-clockwise).
There is a hole (A) in the Push Mower body that will help the oil to flow in the oil retainer container. Wait for the oil to drain completely.
DISPOSE THE USED OIL FOLLOWING THE ENVIRONMENTAL RULES IN YOUR AREA.
Finally reinstall the oil drain plug and the washer and tighten it by applying a medium force (turn the key clockwise).
DO NOT over-tight.
Next add 20oz (0.600 liter) oil to the engine.
Be sure to clean the dipstick of oil residue by rubbing with a rag.
After that put the the cap / dipstick from the oil fill tube back in lock position. Remove the cap again and check the level on the dipstick. Level must NOT PASS THE UPPER LIMIT. See image below.
NOTE: DO NOT OVERFILL because you can damage the engine.
Next put the cap / dipstick from the oil fill tube back in lock position.
Move the Lawn Mower OUTSIDE OF CLOSED SPACES and start the engine. Run it for 1 – 2 minutes.
CHECK for any eventual oil LICKS.
Seems like we are DONE here.
